Living a low carbon lifestyle has turned into a fashionable trend in recent years but some environmentalists may scream in horror if they step foot into a printing shop near a college campus in China.

Millions of students have to turn in their graduation papers or dissertations these few weeks, but before they do so, they need to print it out. And according to a rough calculation, that could add up to tens of millions across the country.

April to June is the busiest time for the print shops around college campuses.

"We have used 160 boxes of A4 papers in the past three months, each box has 2,500 pieces of paper. The dissertations are so many that we keep working in the day and we always have to work overtime at night," said Li Wenting, a print shop owner shop located near Renmin University of China in Beijing.

It is almost the same at other universities.

The owner of a print shop near Beijing Normal University, who didn't want to reveal his name, said that 100 boxes of A4 papers were used in the past two months.

Huang Wei, a senior majoring in English at Beijing International Studies University, printed three drafts of his graduation dissertation, each 25 pages long.

"One was printed in April for the tutor to proofread. The other two are the final forms which were printed and handed in May for oral defense and filing," Huang explained.

Chen Yu, a graduate student at the journalism and communication college at Wuhan University in Hubei Province, printed 17 copies of his graduation dissertation, each 30 pages long.

"Two copies are for proofreading while the others are the final versions, in which 10 copies are for oral defense, five for filing and three for myself," Chen said.

Doctorate dissertations are even longer.

"Most doctoral dissertations are over 100 pages. I have seen the longest one that's more than 1,000 pages," said the owner of a print shop at Beijing Normal University. "A doctoral candidate usually prints six to seven copies."

Considering that 6.3 million students will graduate from universities this year, based on figures from the Ministry of Education, they could use up 378.6 million pieces of paper if each printed three copies of a 20-page paper.

According to Greenpeace, a global environmental advocacy group, a 20-year-old tree could only produce 3,000 pieces of A4 paper. As a result, about 126,200 trees would be needed.

Liu Ziyang, a senior at Beijing Institute of Technology, said it was just a conservative estimate.

"The number of copies we have printed is usually higher than that we have handed in. Some of my classmates reprinted their dissertations many times since they always found mistakes in their printed copies," Liu said.

"As a businessman, I hope more people can come to print. But when I saw some students reprinting a dissertation time and time again due to mistakes, I felt heartbroken. It seems I am not using paper to print but trees," said Li, the owner of a printing house near Renmin University of China.

"Cutting down trees has already caused many problems for our planet. We should avoid hurting it again," Liu said.

Liu appealed to universities to allow electronic versions of dissertations to replace paper ones. "We are completely capable of doing this nowadays. The tutors can proofread the dissertations on their computers while we can amend them on ours too," he said.
